Ingredients: Elk, mushrooms, onion, parsley, garlic, thyme, lard or tallow

Defrosted in fridge

Heated in oven 350F for 15 min

Mushrooms have good flavor and texture
Elk Burger juicy not at all dry with great flavor and texture
Perfect portion size
Smells like wild mushrooms initially but no overwhelming smells
Would order again

Ratatouille

Ratatouille
Ingredients: eggplant, bell pepper, onion, zucchini, garlic, tomato, sea salt, olive oil, basil

Defrosted in fridge
Heated: Oven 350F 15 min
Taste: perfectly seasoned with a great basil/tomato balance
Smell: homemade italian sauce
Texture: veggies with small amount of crunch not mushy or over cooked
Repeat: absolutely

Butternut-Squash-Lasagna-with-Beef

Butternut Squash Lasagna with Beef

Ingredients: butternut squash, grass fed ground beef, cashews, tomato, onion, garlic, basil, sea salt, pepper, grass fed ghee

Defrosted in fridge

Heated in oven 350F for 15 min

Smell: like authentic lasagna
Taste: Cashew tastes like rocatta cheese
Texture: perfectly firm not too soft and firm standing layers like “traditional” Lasagna
Overall: would order again

Chocolate-Chip-Cookies

Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients: almond flour, coconut flour, baking soda, sea salt, grass fed ghee, maple syrup, vanilla, eggs, chocolate chips

Defrosted in the fridge
Taste: gluten free chocolate chip cookie
Texture: soft and chewy
Smell: chocolaty

Sage-Sweet-Potato-Noodles

Sage Sweet Potato Noodles
Ingredients: sweet potato, olive oil, garlic, sage, sea salt

Defrosted in the fridge
Heated: 350F for 15minutes
Smell: sweet potatoes and sage
Taste: perfectly balanced and not overly oiled with a garlic finish
Texture: crunchy with perfect noodle width size

Gyro-Meatballs-with-Zucchini-Noodles

Gyro Meatballs with Zucchini Noodles

Ingredients: Lamb, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, rosemary, oregano, zucchini, red onion, mint, dill, sea salt, coconut milk, cucumber

Defrosted in the fridge and heated in the oven: 350F for 15minutes

Review: looked forward to trying zoodles that had been frozen to see what their taste and texture would be like; they were still crunchy, maybe blanched before froze, not at all mushy and held up well to being heated in the oven and flavor not different then fresh made zoodles.
Smells: the dill and not over powered by lamb (husband had to ask what meatballs were made out of)
Meatballs: great texture and size. Not overpowered by lamb taste and not at all dried out by being heated in the oven
Sauce: very nice blend of spices, lemon and coconut milk and cucumber. No distinctly overpowering flavor.
Overall: Very enjoyable taste, texture, flavor, and smell. Would definitely order again!

Hi All!!  Trina Felber here!  Those are my kids you see in the video- they absolutely loved that chocolate chip cookie and asked for more!  That is a testament to YUMMY!!  I have to say, I agree with Heather, I have tested a few meals from Paleo On The Go, and all have been better than delicious!  The Chicken Noodle Soup was so good, I wanted MORE!!  My all time favorite is the Butternut Squash Lasagna with Beef- OMG!!!  It melts in your mouth and the flavor is incredible!  It is so hard to describe- a touch of natural sweetness from the butternut, crossed with the rugged taste of meet!  This is my Go TO meal when my hubby goes out of town!  I always order a few to have in the freezer to make life easy, and tasty, when it’s just me and the Paleo Kids!!

Make Your Own Flu Fighter Potion and Prevent Viral Invasion!

Since I believe health encompasses much more than just skincare, I bring a great resource to your kitchen and invite you to naturally strengthen your immune system this winter!

The kids are back to school, the weather is turning cold, viruses are getting rampant and our immune system is taking a hit. Just this past week, a personal friend and pediatric physician reported he saw over 60 patients in one day with viral related issues. THE TIME IS NOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN HEALTH PLAN- AND HEALTH POTION!

Elderberry could quite possibly be the most perfect flu-season berry. After all, elderberries contain compounds that inhibit the flu virus enzyme from even penetrating the cell membrane. If the virus is unable to penetrate the cell wall, the virus will not be able to replicate and you are left with your health intact. Once penetration occurs, rapid replication of the virus occurs. Symptoms will be mild and often display as vague, as the immune system attempts to conquer the viral load. Because the flu virus is so potent and rapidly replicates, it easily overtakes the immune system very quickly.

BUT… if you can prevent viral-cell penetration, you can beat the flu even before you know it has arrived at your membranes!

I know all about cellular function. By education and practice, my Nursing Anesthesia career is built upon lipid soluble drugs that pass through the cell membrane to induce anesthetic sleep.

I understand the ramifications that occur when unwanted toxins (a virus is a toxin), penetrates the cell membrane and causes damage. My skincare line, Primal Life Organics was built upon this knowledge. Once inside a cell, the intruder becomes one with the cell and can even destroy or mutate the DNA of the cell. Sickness, cancer, endocrine disruption, altered immune function and inflammations can all be the result of cellular invasion of any kind (viral, chemical, toxin) whether from the environment (flu or skincare) or food.

So, I made my skincare products to improve my health. I want a strong immune system to help fight any uncontrollable and random exposures to chemicals and viruses. By feeding my skin and body the nutrients that support a healthy cell wall membrane, I increase the chances that my cells will prevent invasion by foreign substances. If by chance the substance does penetrate, my body is functioning optimally and has better defenses for neutralizing and eliminating the source with minimal insult.

But when flu season hits, I want extra protection! I trust my cell membranes, however, I know how strong the viral infestation can be and because of this, I go above and beyond the normal, everyday vitamins, probiotics, fish oil and kombucha.

I BREW MY OWN FLU-FIGHTER POTION!! (And it’s really easy… and the kids will swallow it!!)

Elderberries are little powerhouses- take advantage of what they do! Since they inhibit cellular membrane penetration from the flu virus, they therefore prevent invasion of the respiratory tract cells. Elderberries are especially great for preventing bronchitis, colds, coughs and influenza!

Before I give you my Simple and Easy Flu Fighter Potion, you should know what elderberries contain! They are loaded with vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium, beta-carotene, calcium, and phosphorus Elderberries also contain natural substances called flavonoids which help reduce swelling, fight inflammation, and boost the immune system. Cinnamon and cloves offer intense immune boosting properties- and they add just a hint of natural flavor to the elderberry.

What do you have to loose- beside a week home with the flu!

Flu Fighter Potion by Trina Felber
1C Dried Elderberries (I prefer Organic and purchase from here)

7C Water

1C Raw Honey (local preferred)

2  Cinnamon Sticks

6   Cloves

 

In a saucepan, bring berries and water to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for 30 minutes. You can also make in a crockpot, set on a medium setting. Remove from heat and let cool for 15 minutes. Strain elderberries from liquid.

Let juice cool to room temperature, or place in the fridge. DO NOT ADD HONEY TO HOT LIQUID (the heat could destroy the beneficial nutrients of the honey).

Once cooled, add the honey and mix. Store in any glass container in the fridge

Children: 1/2 – 1 tsp a day
Adults: ½ – 1 Tbsp a day

At first sign of any symptoms, increase intake. I take a dose every 2-3 hours until symptoms subside. If my kids get sick, I increase everyone’s dose to 3-4 times a day.

I cannot say you will not get sick, but I believe in prevention. If I give my immune system the tools it needs to function properly, quite possibly, an infestation might not occur, or at least not be as powerful!

***Since I love essential oils and the added benefit they bring, I love to include a few in my potion. My kids do not like the taste of the essential oils, so rarely do I add any to theirs. Essential oils have amazing antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties and help boost the immune system- but make sure they are food grade and safe to ingest. You can add 5-10 drops of the essential oils you choose to approximately 8 ounces of Flu-Fighter Potion. These are my choices:
Lemon
Peppermint
Clove bud
Ginger
Frankincense,
Orange

 

When feeling Under The Weather, I also LOVE making a batch of my Ginger Wellness Tea:

1 inch chunk of fresh ginger thinly sliced

16 oz boiling water

2 cinnamon sticks

6 whole cloves

1 star anise pod

1 heaping Tbs honey

juice of a lemon wedge(optional)

Prepare ginger, and spices and combine in a large thermos.  Add boiling water and cover.  Let sit 30-60 minutes. (I like it when it has sat for 60 minutes or longer)  Add honey before drinking. 

I leave this in a thermos and pour it out as needed.  I sip it throughout the day.  It is great for colds, soothes sore throats, and coughs, breaks fevers, quells nausea, and fights stomach bugs.

RECIPE: Bulletproof Coffee

bulletproofSeveral months ago, I heard about this trend “Bulletproof coffee” and I’m not going to lie, I was a little terrified. Butter AND oil in my coffee? That sounds like a really bad way to start your day.

The idea behind Bulletproof coffee traces back to ancient Tibetan Butter Tea. The idea is that the oil and butter will energize and sustain your hunger longer than your average cup of coffee. 

I am one of those coffee drinkers that likes her coffee black or very sweet. There’s no in between for me, but I also understand that sweetener’s, syrups, and milk can cause my skin to flare up. Which is NOT what I’m after, so on my quest to drink less coffee, feel more energized, and keep my acne at bay — I discovered that the hype behind Bulletproof Coffee is very much real.

The joy of Bulletproof coffee is the way in which it leaves you energized for hours while burning fat, and it curbs your mid-afternoon crash and hunger pains.

The Recipe:

-2 tablespoons of grass feed unsalted butter

-1 (to 2) tablespoons of MCT Oil or Coconut Oil (I prefer Coconut oil)

-2 cups of coffee

1) Brew your coffee as you generally would. I prefer a pour over or a french press if I’m sharing.

2) Get your blender ready. Any blender will work and in fact, if you have a french press, you can use it to froth your coffee with the plunger.

3) Pour coffee into your blender, add the oil, and the butter. Hit blend. Wait for the oil and butter to form a frothy (latte-like) film over the the top of the coffee and you’re all set. You can’t exactly over blend, but you can definitely under blend. It’s a balancing act of your preferences.

4) This is optional, but if you like a really sweet coffee here’s where you’d add in your stevia or pure paleo dark chocolate. I, personally add this while it’s blending to create the perfect flavor.

5) ENJOY.

Notes on the recipe:

The first time you try this recipe, you might want to scale down on the oil/butter until you know how your body will react to it. I worked my way up to this level of butter and oil.

The quality of the beans and brew do matter. The higher the quality of coffee, the better your body will feel. Low-grade coffees are processed differently and do not have the same benefits as the higher end coffees.

Lastly, enjoy! This recipe is widely used (and not created by me) online. There are hundreds of adaptations and that’s because this style of coffee is easily catered to the individual coffee drinker. You can customize until your heart is content.

Favorite Summer Salads, Homemade Pickles and a Refreshing Dessert

 Guest blogger Anne Dudley shares a few of her favorite, Cavegirl-friendly summer dinner ideas.

When it’s too hot to cook, quick and simple salads save me from splurging on to-go meals, or eating shakes and smoothies for dinner every night. Having a few different fresh veggies in the fridge each week means I can get in and out of the kitchen fast and never make the same meal twice! This summer, I’ve been able to source most of my produce from our local farmer’s markets, which really makes a difference in the freshness and flavor of the veggies.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Throw on some pickles

I don’t normally do this… but my homemade pickles are so good, I threw them on my salad and was pleasantly surprised. I followed a recipe similar to The Preppy Paleo’s, but there are plenty of recipes online, and with plenty of fresh veggies in season, it’s the perfect time to pickle!

Like many primal eaters, I try to keep salad dressing simple, so the vinegar based pickles add a little flavor that pairs well with the vinegar and oil dressings I make myself.

So. Much. Squash. 

In the summer, squash is plentiful, affordable and filling. Between the market and friends and family’s gardens, there just always seems to be so much of it to use. This week I bit off a bit more than I could chew at the farmer’s market and ended up with too much squash.

For a quick salad, if you start by cutting up the squash and putting it in a pan with your favorite oil (coconut oil for me – which I usually find on the cheap at Target), you can have the rest of the salad chopped and ready by the time it’s done.

I chose two varieties of lettuce at the market, small cucumbers, and a beautiful mix of yellow, orange, and red grape tomatoes to liven it up this week.

Rice on a Salad?

It doesn’t just happen at Chipotle! Paleo folks go back and forth on rice, but I think Mark’s Daily Apple does a great job explaining the benefits and drawbacks of eating rice occasionally.

Every now and then, I add rice to a salad, especially when I am having a highly active week and feel like I’ve earned it. It feels like a treat and you can set and forget (and portion control) in the rice cooker. And while you’re having fun in the summer sun, don’t forget Primal Life Organics’ sun protection products — Sun-Up and Sun-Down

For this salad, I fried bacon and leftover baked beets, sliced and cooked in the fat. I tossed the lot with a little balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper and added it to a romaine salad.

As a born lover of dessert, I’ve baby stepped my way and tricked myself into opting for healthy and semi-sweet, and Paleo friendly options. To beat the heat, I sliced fresh strawberries into chilled seltzer water and put them in a fancy glass. It’s just enough sweet crispness after a long day!

Simple Summer Recipe: Paleo Vanilla Almond Milk

Extensive online research and hands-on comparisons led us to Ninja’s Ultima Kitchen System – which recently found it’s way into our heart and home. With the ability to blend, food process, and make portable smoothies — what’s not to love!

Paleo Recipes: Sweet Potato Fries, Paleo Pizza and Easy Hard-Boiled Eggs

We’re excited to welcome our first guest blogger to CaveGirlSkinCare.com! Heather Seikel is a Registered Nurse (RN), a fitness enthusiast and thrives on a Paleo lifestyle. Heather has kindly shared a few tasty-looking, Paleo friendly recipes with us! 
My husband is the inspiration behind the recipe for Baked Sweet Potato Fries. He is not a sweet potato fan, so finding the perfect seasoning to accentuate not only the color of the sweet potato but also it’s mild flavor was a task he knowingly knew I could handle. To make the flavor experience complete, we both agreed that pairing the fries with Steve’s PaleoGoods Ketchup would make for a perfect mouth full of flavor. 
Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Set Oven to 350 F
1. Cut a large sweet potato into halves lengthwise, and then into thick fries. Keep in mind that the thicker the fries are cut, the longer it will take to bake to get your desired texture.

2. Season raw fry sections, making sure to thoroughly cover, with:
2  tablespoons of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)
2 teaspoons coconut sugar or date sugar
1 teaspoon coarse salt
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
