Hi. My name is Trina Felber. I had a bad habit. I am a nurse, and I poisoned myself daily for 40 years. It was a bad habit… it was making me sick, and bloated, and tired, and forgetful, and fat and lazy, and my skin was dull and broken out and oily.
I broke my habit seven years ago- and I never looked back. Today, I have energy, normal functioning GI, reproductive, nervous, immune and endocrine systems. A healthy metabolism and radiant, glowing, beautiful skin.
My habit? I never read my labels. I didn’t know I was poisoning myself with chemicals. I didn’t realize how commercial skincare was harming my body- causing acne and bloating and oily skin. My immune system was failing. I was full of inflammation and disease.
Today, I know better. I read ALL of my labels… and I made my own skincare to be sure I only feed my body real food nutrients. And what a difference it made!
A habit (or wont) is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur unconsciously. In the American Journal of Psychology (1903) it is defined in this way: “A habit, from the standpoint of psychology, is a more or less fixed way of thinking, willing, or feeling acquired through previous repetition of a mental experience.” Habitual behavior often goes unnoticed in persons exhibiting it, because a person does not need to engage in self-analysis when undertaking routine tasks. Habits are sometimes compulsory. The process by which new behaviours become automatic is habit formation. Old habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form because the behavioural patterns we repeat are imprinted in our neural pathways, but it is possible to form new habits through repetition.
As behaviors are repeated in a consistent context, there is an incremental increase in the link between the context and the action. This increases the automaticity of the behavior in that context. Your life is filled with habits. I bet we each have at least 100 habits we are unaware of. Habits we live EVERY DAY!
We all have them. We all live them.
Consider this: almost everything you do, use, eat and touch is a habit. The toothpaste you use is a habit. The shampoo you use is a habit. Your face wash, deodorant, hair spray, moisturizer, soap, anti-aging cream, styling agents… all habits. Taste, smell, sound of the bottle opening. Habits. Habitual items we use every day.
Our feet take us right to them. Our arms know exactly which shelf they sit on and what height to rise to. We grab them. Our hands know exactly what the bottle feels like- the shape, the texture- so familiar and comforting. We don’t even need our eyes to know it is the right bottle. In fact, our eyes have never even looked at the ingredients… EVERY STEP IS A HABIT! Break the habit and LOOK at the ingredients.
Once home, we put them in their place. Our body knows where they are stored. At the proper time, we reach for them, recognize the bottle, smell the toxic fragrance, apply and are so familiar with the lather, smoothness and texture. NEVER DO WE GLANCE AT THE INGREDIETNS. That is not our habit!
BREAK THE HABIT! Don’t walk directly there. Don’t raise your arm. Instead, STOP…make the conscious effort to turn the bottle over and READ THE INGREDIENTS!

Awareness is the only way to stop a habit. Awareness that almost everything we do in a day is a habit brings new meaning to living.
